When you’re navigating the world of aged care for the first time it can help to ask for directions.   We’ve put together a list of helpful links that can assist you in your search for information.  If you’re a carer, an adult with older parents, or simply doing your own research it’s worth having a look.

My Aged Care

My Aged Care is the Federal Government’s central information point and national contact centre for aged care.

You can do your research online or call 1800 200 422 between 8.00am and 8.00pm (weekdays) and between 10.00am and 2.00pm (Saturday).

Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission

This independent government body is responsible for overseeing all aged care accreditation and complaints. The role of the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission is to protect and enhance the safety, health, well-being and quality of life of people receiving aged care.

You can contact them at any time on 1800 951 822 or email audit.feedback@agedcarequality.gov.au if you have concerns about the quality of aged care services that you or a loved one are receiving. Visit their website agedcarequality.gov.au/making-complaint for more information.

Australian Government Department of Health

The Australian Government seeks to provide healthier ageing options for all Australians through a world-class health system.  Check out this website for all you need to know about the Department’s health and ageing policies, programs and services.

Australian Government Department of Immigration and Border Protection: Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS National) 

Translating and interpreting help is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week with TIS National.

It’s a great service for people who do not speak English, and agencies or businesses needing to communicate with non-English speaking clients.  

Australian Government Department of Social Services

The Department of Social Services’ mission is to improve the lives of Australians by helping to build the capacity and wellbeing of individuals, families and communities. This website gives you access to a range of useful programs and information designed to help it achieve its goal.

Australian Government Department of Veterans’ Affairs

The Department of Veterans’ Affairs gives advice to serving and former members of the Australian Defence Force, their families and others concerned with their wellbeing.  This website provides information on pensions, health, housing and commemorations.

Dementia Australia

If you or a loved one has Alzheimer’s this is a great website to explore.  Alzheimer’s Australia is the peak body providing support and advocacy for Australians living with dementia.

Beyondblue

Beyond Blue is an Australian, independent non-profit organisation working to address issues associated with depression, anxiety or related mental disorders.

Centrelink

Centrelink is an agency of  Services Australia and delivers a range of services to the community.  Centrelink can provide assistance if you are unemployed, have a disability, are caring for someone else, are retired and/or receiving a Government pension.

Carer Gateway

Carer Gateway is a national support service funded by the Australian Government. It provides free support for carers through a network of regional Carer Gateway service providers. Carers can access a wide range of help from counselling and peer support groups to respite care, home help and equipment.

National Aged Care Alliance

The National Aged Care Alliance is a representative body of peak national organisations in aged care.  It includes consumer groups, providers, unions, and health professionals who are working together for a more positive future for aged care in Australia.

National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA)

The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) is an independent statutory agency whose role is to implement the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).  The NDIS supports a better life for those Australians with a significant and permanent disability and their families and carers. 

NDIA centres provide free and confidential information on disability and other support services at a local, state and national level.

Peak Consumer Policy and Advocacy Groups Representing Older People

Carers Australia

Carers Australia is the national peak body representing Australia’s carers.  It advocates on their behalf to influence policies and services at a national level.

Carers Australia works collaboratively with partners and its member organisations to deliver a range of essential national carer services.

Council on the Ageing (COTA) Australia

COTA Australia's role is to promote, improve and protect the wellbeing of older people in Australia, both as citizens and consumers.  It strives to be recognised by government, the general community and the media as representing, advocating for and serving all older Australians. 

National Seniors Australia

National Seniors Australia is a not-for-profit, membership-based community organisation that endeavours to provide economic and social benefits for people aged 50 and over.  It represents its members’ views to government at all levels and also provides service and advice to organisations assisting people 50 years and older.

Volunteering Australia

Interested in volunteering?  Volunteering Australia is the national peak body working to advance volunteering in the Australian community.  Its mission is to represent the diverse views and needs of the volunteer sector while promoting the activity of volunteering as one of enduring social, cultural and economic value.
