Gran Slam is a collaboration between Feros Care and performance producer Everybody NOW, an organisation that shares our commitment to smashing stereotypes and supporting communities to live bolder lives.
More than 20 seniors had the chance to be a part of the slam poetry revolution under the guidance of an expert poet and literary performer, David Stavanger. The project consisted of a series of poetry workshops that taught aspiring wordsmiths to give voice to their ideas and experiences. The project culminated in a performance that was captured on film and will be screened at a Feros Care bespoke event at Byron Writers Festival.
Our Gran Slammers are people with a declaration to make, a voice to be heard, an opinion to be penned – regardless of prior experience in poetry. The Gran Slam project gave them the skills and platform to express themselves through prose and performance, and access to a wealth of knowledge that made the final performance a riveting success.
David Stavanger is an award winning and widely published poet and writer who has directed and featured in major festivals, often under the alias of Ghostboy, including Queensland Poetry Festival, Brisbane Writers Festival, and Sydney Writers Festival, among many. He is also the co-editor of the first ever Australian & New Zealand spoken word anthology Solid Air (UQP, forthcoming 2019).
